Suzuki Planning to Launch Production of Fuel Cell Powered Vehicles

by Saad I. on March 21, 2013

The Japanese small vehicle specialist, Suzuki Motors, is planning to launch fuel cell powered vehicles and scooter soon. This announcement came just after the opening of their first fuel cell production facility in Yokohama, Japan. The production facility is a result of joint partner-shipping with the UK based Intelligent Energy and the Suzuki Motors. The partner-shipping is on 50/50 basis and has been christened as SMILE FC System Corporation. Under the agreement the Intelligent Energy will assist and provide technical assistance to the Suzuki Motors for development of air cooled fuel cell system for propulsion system in cars and other purposes. The facility would be later scaled up to provide fuel cell stacks for use in Suzuki’s future vehicles.

The SMILE FC plant, Yokohama, Japan, is a joint collaboration between Suzuki and Intelligent Energy to develop fuel cells for future production vehicles and two-wheelers

The fuel cell is not a new innovation. It has been already been tested and used in various applications. The fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity which is then used to drive the on board electric motors. It is totally clean and produces no pollution to the environment. Moreover the filling of oxygen and hydrogen tanks still uses less energy for refill than the amount of CO2 produced by the combustion powered cars. The refilling time is also less cit is required The fuel cell is also used to power up the satellites and provide electric generation at remote places. The first fuel cell vehicle was the 1966 Chevrolet Electrovan with a 120 miles range; however, vehicle was not practical at all since all of the usable space was consumed by the fuel cell stacks and fuel tanks. The project was also considered cost prohibitive thus generating lack of interest from the other manufacturers of the time. Since the 2000s, a renewed interest has been seen with several automakers releasing prototype vehicles; but to miniaturization of the technology, these vehicles are less grumpy and less bulky than the 1966 Chevy Electrovan.

The Suzuki SX4 FCV fuel cell powered vehicle went under extensive test on the Japanese roads during the year 2008

Suzuki is a small vehicle specialist and has a global presence in over 190 countries. Some of the popular models are swift, alto, vitara and jimmy. Suzuki plans to produce fuel cell vehicles in the near future. In 2009, the SX4 FCV fuel cell vehicle was displayed at the Hokkaido Tōyako summit. The SX4 FCV is based on the 5 door SX4 hatchback and features an 80kW hydrogen fuel cell and 68kW electric motor. It had a range of 250 km. The car has even passed all the Japanese Government regulations and is certified for production. The concept vehicle is expected to go into production somewhere in the near future. Suzuki also showcased the SX4 FCV at the 2009 Tokyo motor show an 2009 Paris motor show.

Besides vehicles, Suzuki is also considering introducing the fuel cell powered bikes and scooters. The fuel cell powered Burgman scooter has already received the nod from the European authorities for mass production. This has also been made in collaboration with the UK based Intelligent Energy and has a claimed range of over 100 miles (considering the speed in the 40mph urban driving regime). The hydrogen fuel tank has been stored underbelly and the scooter itself weighs 170 kilos. The Burgman scooter is almost production ready and is expected to be launched soon in the future, making it the first fuel cell powered mass production two wheeler around the globe. This is not the first that Suzuki has come up with a fuel powered two wheeler. Earlier it showcased a concept “Cross Cage” bike at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. The futuristic looking bike had a working fuel cell technology that will be used in the future hydrogen fuel cell powered two wheelers.

The Suzuki Cross Cage fuel cell powered bike was first unveiled at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Note the cutaway diagram showing the placing of the fuel cell components

The Intelligent Energy is  UK based R&D firm that aims to pursue clean technology and assist the global giants in technical assistance in low carbon fuel cell systems. They specialize in the PEM fuel cells and are promoting actively PEM-electric hybrid configuration power-train for driving the cars of the future. The fuel cell systems can end dependence on the fossil fuel and help in  significant reduction of carbon dioxide in the environment by up to 75%.

A More Efficient Mazda Rotary Engine Could be Back in Five Years

by Saad I. on March 18, 2013

Mazda is planning bring back the rotary engine in next five years. The Japanese automaker – who has a penchant for wankel rotary engines – has confirmed that it is now  working on the development of next generation of fuel efficient rotary engines. The last time the wankel rotary engine was offered in Mazda Rx8 that was discontinued in 2011. The rotary engines have more output than the piston engine configuration, but suffers from fuel efficiency.

The Wankel rotary gives double the output than the equaivalent piston engine configuration

Mazda is known for use of mass commercialization of wankel rotary engines. The Rx series of sports cars all featured rotary engines. However, over the years, the tighter emissions control around the globe gradually forced the company to halt the production. Apart from emission issues, rotary engines also suffer from fuel efficiency and maintenance problems. Mazda is the only known automaker around the globe who pursues development of rotary engines presently; all other automakers ventured into wankel rotary engines in 70s and early 80s, but soon called it quits. The last remaining production vehicle to feature a rotary engine was the Mazda’s Rx8 sports car that was pulled out of the market in 2012.

The Renesis rotary engine powered the RX8 sports car

It is believed that the New engine will reap the benefits from the Mazda’s own SkyActiv technology. To reduce emissions and increase efficiency,it is expected that Mazda will increase the displacement of the new engine to 1600 cc – compared to the 1308 of the RX8’s 13B engine. The increased displacement will improve the thermal efficiency and engine torque at all speeds. Earlier reports indicated that Mazda will develop a laser ignition system as well for the new rotary engine; however, officially, Mazda has not released any technical details or technologies being used for the new engine. The new engine will also feature lighter material used for construction of engine block. Use of light material, such as aluminium, will weigh the 1600 cc displacement rotary engine less than the now defunct 13B rotary engine. New gasoline direct injection will be a part of the the new rotary engine, which will greatly resolve the fuel economy issues with the previous engines.

In a world where everyday new models of  electric vehicles and hybrids are being rolled out, Mazda has still to launch any EV or hybrid. It is instead pitching up its SkyACTIV technology to increase the fuel economy. Mazda also unveiled a hydrogen powered RX8 RE in 2004, leading to the possibility of new rotary engined vehicle to be powered by hydrogen in the future. The RX8 RE featured two fuel tanks – one for gasoline and other for hydrogen. 30 suh cars were delivered to the Norwegian hydrogen highway corridor project  “Hynor”.

Mazda RX8 RE. It is expected that new rotary engine will b used in a hybrid or bi-fuel comfiguration.

Mazda currently has only MX5 sports car in its line up. The rotary powered RX7 and RX8 were a sensation and prefered choice of car tuners and street racers around the globe. Stringent emissions regulations and poor fuel economy coupled with low demand and strong yen led to the suspension of the RX8 from the production. Mazda is the only global kown automaker who sticked to the rotary engines since it launched the first production rotary powered Cosmo in 1967.  Mazda is still committed to the the rotary engine is still and will return soon with a more efficient engine with in next five years.

Yamato, Toyota, Hino start trials of battery-electric 1-tonne delivery truck

by Saad I. on March 15, 2013

Although a lot of development and activity is seeing in the EV passenger car segment, little is being ventured into Heavy duty EV truck segment. With the excpetion of Smith EV conversion services in USA, a full EV commercial truck has yet to be launched by any well known manufacturer. However, Hino and Toyota has started field trial run of 1 tonne truck in Japan to study the commercial viability of introducing a production variant later. Thew EV truck will be used in the delivery operations of the Japanese Yamato delivery operations.

Both Trucks will be used for Yamato refrigeration services, Cool Ta-Q Bin, in Tokyo. The trucks will be run initially for a trial period lastin one year. The experience gained will then be used by Hino and Toyota to further study the refinement in the EV truck and subsequent commercial launch. Yamato is already taking a number of steps to promote pro-green culture. The initiative has been dubbed as “Necology” by Yamato, It consists of implementation of different eco friendly procedures in its business elements. The areas identified under this program include: packing, transport and delivery. In packaging area, eco friendly materials will be used that can be easily recycled and leaves less carbon footprint; Special attention will be paid to make sure that such initiative is not only eco-friendly, but also economical. The transport business will eventually see the usage of greener transport solution that will help reduce emissions and rising fuel cost. Other strategies will be limiting the number of vehicles in the fleet by replacing a number of smaller vehicles with single large vehicle to carry more load and make less trips. The drivers will be trained on adopting eco-driving habits to reduce delivery times and conserve fuel.

The EV trucks manufactured by the Hino and Toyota feature a front wheel electric driven setup and a low mounted bed. Traditionally, the trucks have an engine mounted below the driver seats that drives the rear wheels. However, The Hino and Toyota has replaced it with a single 70kW motor that drives the front wheels. The  spaces vacated by the removal of drive shaft allows the battery packs to be placed in the bed. Also, this configuration allows the bed to be mounted low to provide low center of gravity, better grip, chassis rigidity and provide more cargo space. The cargo compartment is kept cool by a refrigerator/freezer that will receive power from the battery packs.Since the whole truck is powered by power derived from the battery packs, no emissions is produced, ride is quiet and it is ideal for use in residential areas during late night or early hours.

The EV truck will sit below than the conventiional trucks, hence less drag it will face

This is not the first time that the Hino and Toyota Duo has ventured into EV truck segment. Earlier, at 42nd Tokyo Motor show in 2011, Hino unveiled a full working practical EV truck prototype with a low bed configuration design. The low bed configuration allows the battery packs to be placed below in the space normally taken up by the driveshaft. The battery pack consists of 350 V 28kWh battery pack that drives the front mounted 70kW motor. The EV truck takes up to 8 hours to get fully charged. Using a CHAdeMO special charger, the charging time can be lessened to 45 minutes.

Pair of EV delivery trucks currently undergoing trial

Toyota is already a well established brand in the hybrid segment. By Feb 2013, Toyota has already sold over 3 million units of different models of PRIUS family. Apart from PRIUS, Toyota has also launched hybrid models of mid size Camry and Highlander and is planning to add hybrid version of RAV4 soon in the future. It is possible that Toyota may utilize its expertise it gained in hybrid technology in development of hybrid drivetrain for the next generation of trucks, but presently it seems it is more interested in pursuing a pure electric powertrain. The reasons are obvious that EV truck will allow a low bed configuration that will carry more cargo and keep the battery pack low close to the ground.

Japanese Automakers Shift Plants to Mexico To export Vehicles Worldwide

by Saad I. on March 10, 2013

Amidst rising production cost and strong yen, japanese automakers are now planning to shift their plants from US to mexico and make it a manufacturing hub for exporting cars to other countries. Nissan, Toyota and Honda are already operating their manufacturing units based in in Mexico. Nissan, the second largest Japanese automaker and 6th largest globally, announced last year plans to open a third manufacturing facility in the country. The Mexico is fast becoming a global hub for vehicle manufacturing and export. There are 25 different auto manufacturing units in the country with an output of over 2 million cars each year.

Honda already has a manufacturing unit in Mexico and now plans to open one more manufacturing unit.

The automotive industry in Mexico is one of the main contributor to the overall economic growth in the country. The country’s production was 2.88 million units alone in the year 2012. The statistics reveals that the automotive industry in mexico is worth over 30 billion dollars and provides direct jobs to over 500,000 people in the country., The industry accounts for 3 percent of the overall GDP. Automotive industry has a 23 percent contribution in the country’s total export. It attracts a foreign investment of 6 percent each year. 80 percent of the total production is destined for export to other countries.

The reason for this tremendous growth is the resourcefulness and low cost that attracts major car makers from across the globe. The major players are the american and japanese automakers. The japanese carmakers are in particularly shifting more of their manufacturing units from US to mexico in a bid to enjoy the scale of economy in the country. Nissan is one such automaker that is planning to soon open a third manufacturing unit in the country. Toyota and Honda are already expanding in the country with Subaru and Mazda expected to join their home partners in the country soon. Mazda is investing $500 million dollars and plans to produce around 230,00 cars annually. Honda is building a second plant at  Guanajuato, Central Mexico with a capacity to produce around 200,000 cars annually, including production of 50,000 Fit being shifted from its plant in Japan.

Nissan Sentra being assembled at a plant in Mexico. Nissan is soon opening a third manufacturing plant in the country

The strong yen and the high cost are the reason that these japanese automakers are moving from us to mexico. Honda will shift the 50,000 global annual production of Honda Fit to mexico from Japan while Mazda is planning to shift production of axela and demio compact models once its completed building its plant. The Japanese automakers are looking forward their operations but the strong yen is hampering the demands from potential markets. Apart from shifting passenger car operation, commercial vehicle makers like Hino and Isuzu are also eyeing an expansion.

Apart from the car manufacturers, OEM suppliers are also making Mexico a hub for their operations. Mexico is becoming the next Ghinza for Japanese automakers. Ghinza is an upmarket place in Tokyo. Moreover, 50 Japanese auto parts manufacturers have already made their presence in the country. The Production currently stands close to 3 million units in the country, which is expected to cross the 3 million benchmark at a growth rate of 6.8 percent through 2015.

Japan Automotive Industry: Getting Back On The Right Track

by Janice A. on February 9, 2013

The 2011 tsunami of Japan has affected most of the industries including the automobiles.  Production was halted for the car factories because of the disruption the calamity created for the parts and supplies.  Thus those who were thinking of buying a Honda or Toyota for that year settled for a Ford or GM.  Later on the same year, the Thailand-based part plants were also interrupted with the flooding.  But Japan, known for making quality products also is made of resilient citizens and is evident on the way the car industry has bounced back the previous year.

Here are the pointers that made the automotive industry in Japan get back on track:

  • Japan Automotive IndustryA total of 26.1 percent is the increase of number of vehicles sold for 2012 as compared to 2011 as reported by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.  This is just the figure for local sales in Japan.
  • Total number of automobiles sold was at 3,390,274 for 2012 and includes the car, buses and trucks in Japan.  In categorical data, the passenger cars at 3,014,651, trucks at 363,685 and buses at 11,938.  The cars rose to 26.3 percent, trucks at 24.4 percent and the buses at 12.1 percent.
  • The mini vehicles that were sold locally last year reached up to 1.98 million units that is 30.1 percent higher than last year.
  • Eco-friendly car sales also boosted because of the government subsidy to attract more buyers.
  • Toyota grabbed the number one spot for 2012 in terms of global sales at 9.748 million vehicles.  This came after General Motors or GM took over the top slot in 2011 because of the Japan earthquake and tsunami that hampered Japan car sales.  For 2012, GM came in second place at 9.29 million vehicles and then Volkswagen is on the third place with 9.1 million vehicles.

There were also negative pointers that affected the sales reduction in the last few months:

  • In December of 2012 though, the sales went down by 3.4 percent as compared to the last month because of the expiration of government subsidies on eco-friendly vehicles.
  • There are also political tensions that troubled the sales of the Japanese cars in China because of the territorial dispute going on.  Consumers from both countries were compelled to boycott products made from the other country to show their loyalty.  Honda cars sold slipped by 5.3 percent with only 1,181,500 car sales; Toyota sales went down by 5 percent at 840,500; Honda fell by 3.1 percent at 598,576.

But amidst the slight dips in the sales of the last month and decrease in China sales, the overall global sales of the Japan automobile industry concludes at the positive side.  This just shows the world that being able to focus on the company goals will ensure the success of the operations with the high sales.  For the year 2013, the car industries of Japan look forward to more vehicle sales than how they performed on 2012.  This really means that the car manufacturers are coming back with a vengeance focusing on doing well rather than dwelling on the bad they had experienced.
